REVIERa
The lignite phase-out by 2038 will result in the closure of the last lignite-fired power plant. This confronts society with the task of a far-reaching structural change. Here, the expansion of a CO2-neutral energy supply and a resource cycle that is as closed as possible are particularly important.
Under these prospects, it was decided to transform the Rhenish mining area into a model region for energy supply and resource security, thus starting a profound and long-term transformation process. RWTH Aachen University is also accompanying this structural change and thus launched the cross-faculty project REVIERa in 2019 to facilitate the necessary exchange between research, politics, administration, business and civil society. To this end, there is an interdisciplinary exchange between researchers at the university on the one hand, and close cooperation with stakeholders from the Rhenish mining area on the other.
